About Scripps Undergraduate Education

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography Department offers over 45 undergraduate courses covering a wide breadth of earth and marine and environmental sciences. There are introductory classes for non majors, and upper-division courses intended for a wide range of students in natural science majors.

Earth Sciences

For students interested in careers in earth sciences, Scripps Institution of Oceanography offers a B.S. degree and a contiguous B.S./M.S. degree in Earth Sciences. The program also offers an academic minor in Earth Sciences.

Marine Sciences

For students interested in broadening their understanding of and opportunity in marine science and oceanography, the program offers an academic minor in Marine Science. The Marine Science minor is designed to complement the strong disciplinary training of UCSD basic natural science and engineering majors (i.e. chemistry, physics, biological sciences, earth sciences, engineering, mathematics etc.) by providing a broad interdisciplinary perspective with an applied environmental focus.

Environmental Systems

For students interested in environmental careers. Scripps participates in the interdisciplinary Environmental Systems Program, which offers a B.S. degrees in Environmental Systems with specializations in Earth Science and other B.S. and a B.A degrees.  See the Environmental Systems sections of the catalog or http://esys.ucsd.edu for details.  

Research

In addition to formal coursework, dozens of UCSD undergraduates, from a wide variety of majors, benefit each year from individual and group research projects with SIO faculty and researchers.
