About Scripps Undergraduate Education
The Scripps Institution of Oceanography Department offers over 45
undergraduate courses covering a wide breadth of earth and marine and
environmental sciences. There are introductory classes for non majors,
and upper-division courses intended for a wide range of students in
natural science majors.
Earth Sciences
For students interested in careers in earth sciences, Scripps Institution of Oceanography offers a B.S. degree and a contiguous B.S./M.S. degree in Earth Sciences. The program also offers an academic
minor in Earth Sciences.
Marine Sciences
For students interested in broadening their understanding of and
opportunity in marine science and oceanography, the program offers an
academic minor in Marine Science. The Marine Science minor is
designed to complement the strong disciplinary training of UCSD basic
natural science and engineering majors (i.e. chemistry, physics,
biological sciences, earth sciences, engineering, mathematics etc.) by
providing a broad interdisciplinary perspective with an applied
environmental focus.
Environmental Systems
For students interested in environmental careers. Scripps participates in the interdisciplinary Environmental Systems Program, which offers a B.S. degrees in Environmental Systems with specializations in Earth Science and other B.S. and a B.A degrees. See the Environmental Systems sections of the catalog or
http://esys.ucsd.edu for details.
Research
In addition to formal coursework, dozens of UCSD undergraduates, from a
wide variety of majors, benefit each year from individual and group
research projects with SIO faculty and researchers.
